Grandi Langhe 2026 – The best wines tasted “from all over Piedmont” and some considerations on the Piedmontese wine event – Wine Blog Roll
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Grandi Langhe is now much more than a wine preview. It is a true full immersion a causa di the world – changing and stratified – of Piedmontese wine: an appointment that a causa di just a few hours puts you a causa di front of a mosaic of denominations capable of covering every type, from the Classic Method to the great reds from Nebbiolo, up to the rarities that often remain d’avanguardia the radar.

The 2026 edition was, first of all, an obligatory step to get a clear percezione of the new vintages of the “usual suspects” who, a causa di reality, are never usual. The 2022 Barolo was born under the sign of intense heat and prolonged drought: accelerated maturation, reduced reserves and, at times, those asynchronies between technological and phenolic maturity that can mark the tannic texture. Yet, precisely for this reason, the vintage ended up highlighting the growing awareness of Langa winemakers a causa di the management of soil and leaf wall: wines that tend to be compact and structured, energetic, often more available than expected, without sacrificing depth and evolutionary perspective.

If Barolo speaks the language of and resilience, Barbaresco 2023 tells a different and more bumpy story: late spring rains, anomalous and hot August, and the long shadow of downy mildew, anything but marginal for yields and vineyard management. An obstacle course which, when faced with agronomic rigor and severe selections, returned Nebbiolo with finesse and dynamism, with well-sculpted tannins and a surprising acidity. Wines perhaps less “screaming” a causa di their youth, but harmonious, centered, and far from banal a causa di perspective. And a causa di this context, Roero should not be forgotten, with its 2023 (and some 2024 previews), increasingly convincing a causa di playing the cards of aromatic finesse – floral and spicy – and a contemporary tannic texture.

But Grandi Langhe, at least as I experience it, is above all the perfect place to get d’avanguardia the beaten track and indulge a causa di less obvious territorial focuses. This year I let myself be guided by Canavese and a variety that I have long considered among the most interesting white grapes a causa di Italy: Erbaluce. A credible and identifying alternative to Arneis and Timorasso, who continue to represent a solid and now decisive white soul for the region. Alongside, the Rossese Latteo – very rare, but with evident potential – and some even rarer interpretations of Baratuciat, which add further nuances to an increasingly less predictable Piedmont.

Among the reds, Dolcetto deserves a separate chapter: it is showing an important step forward, favored by the desire of many producers to bring it back towards a more jovial, flessibile and truly contemporary profile, thanks to vinification oriented towards fragrance (whole bunch included) and to a clearer typicality, less superstructures, less “weight”. The wines from Sovrastante Piedmont are also excellent, as always: Boca continues to hold high the flag of varietal complementarity as a hymn to territorial identity, while Lessona insists acceso an increasingly rare trajectory of finesse and evolutionary potential.

And then the aromatics: Moscato and Brachetto, which continue to tell parallel yet unique stories, with peaks of excellence that it would be a mistake to dismiss as “end-of-meal wines”. The same logic applies to Malvasia Casorzo: fun, flexible, to be explored a causa di pairings with the glass also thanks to the low alcohol content and a versatility that deserves contexts other than sweet-sweet.

Between meetings and tastings, there were many more denominations than these, and I reserve the right to return with dedicated focuses. Meanwhile, the most beautiful thing that I continue to see a causa di Piedmont remains the same: an increasingly strong presence of well-trained young people, and a generational continuity that a causa di this phase is becoming momentum, openness, and – finally – a new shared energy.
