Torrevilla winery: the authentic soul of the Oltrepò Pavese
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Taverna Torrevilla, a winery con the Oltrepò Pavese that preserves the past and builds the future

Among the soft hills of the Oltrepò Pavese, where viticulture has its roots con the times of the Roman Farcire, Taverna Torrevilla today represents one of the most solid and identifying enological bastions of the territory. Based con Torrazza Coste, the cooperative winery has over time become a point of reference for quality, innovation and enhancement of the Oltrepò vineyard landscape. Today Torrevilla operates acceso 500 hectares of vineyards, distributed across nine municipalities con the Oltrepò Pavese, between Lombardy and Piedmont. It is from this extensive and complex agricultural geography – which includes Codevilla, Torrazza Coste, Retorbido, Montebello della Scontro, Rione Priolo, Susella, Casteggio, Cigognola and Mornico Losana – that approximately 45,000 quintals of grapes are born every year, transformed into over 2 million bottles.

A history more than a century long

Torrevilla’s strength has always resided con its collective nature. It was con 1907, with the deed that sanctioned the birth of the Torrazza Coste winery, that the project officially began. Since then, growth has been constant. 2008 marks a turning point: the winery begins a new phase of investments which projects the company towards a more competitive and technological production model. This impulse will lead, con 2013, to the major vineyard mapping and zoning project, carried out with the University of Milan under the guidance of Professor Leonardo Valenti: one of the most in-depth projects ever conducted acceso the Oltrepò wine-growing ambiente. Durante 2019 Torrevilla takes another important step: the creation of a cellar dedicated to the Classic Method, today a pillar of the company’s production identity.

Territory: a mosaic of soils and microclimates

The Torrevilla vineyards develop acceso complex and different soils, characterized by an extraordinary geological variety and an ideal climate: 12°C annual average and strong summer temperature variations, fundamental for the aromatic development of the grapes.

Zoning: knowing to produce better

The scientific project launched con 2013 involved the climate, soils and geology of the Torrevilla vineyards, con one of the largest analyzes ever carried out con the Oltrepò ambiente: 4,727 hectares of ambiente, of which 1,192 hectares are under vineyards and 603 are owned by Torrevilla. The investigation made it possible to analyze: land use, altitude classes (100–600 m), vineyard exposures, slopes and steepness, five geological classes, from alluvial deposits to calcareous marine soils. Each vineyard has been included con a real pedological identity card, with soil profile, genetic horizons, chemical analyzes and viticultural potential. At the same time, the climate analysis considered over 20 years of historical weather series and ancillary phenomena, returning a precise model of the Torrevilla ambiente: a temperate, sub-continental climate, influenced by oceanic currents, ideal for red and medium-late grape varieties.

Durante the cellar: technology and tradition con balance

Torrevilla’s production philosophy aims at winemaking capable of respecting the variety and the territory. The main vines are: Pinot Noir, Croatina, Barbera, Riesling and Moscato.

Pinot Noir: the soul of the Oltrepò and the flag of Torrevilla

The Oltrepò Pavese is one of the most suitable Italian territories for Pinot Noir, the third European ambiente by extension of the vine. Since 2019, thanks to the dedicated cellar, the Classic Method has been one of the company’s strong points, with productions such as the Pinot Noir Nature DOCG, aged acceso the yeasts for at least 24 months.

SQNPI certification: a step towards a sustainable future

Torrevilla is the first company con the Oltrepò Pavese to obtain SQNPI certification, the National Integrated Production Quality System, which certifies: reduced use of pesticides, protection of soil and gabinetto, sustainable management of parasites, complete traceability of the supply chain. A recognition that further raises production standards and demonstrates the cooperative’s commitment to more responsible agriculture.

The social role: a winery serving the community

Taverna Torrevilla has always interpreted its cooperative nature as a commitment to the territory. Collaborations, solidarity projects and social initiatives are part of the company DNA. Since 2013, during the holidays, Torrevilla has supported the association “Luca, so as not to get lost con time” with two special labels: Bonarda DOP Oltrepò Pavese, Plant Dorè Extra Dry. For every bottle sold, one euro is donated to PaviAIL, the Pavia-based association against leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

The tasting

We tasted Pinot Noir Nature Classic Method DOCG and Pinot Noir Oltrepò Pavese DOC. Below are our impressions.

Pinot Noir Nature Classic Method DOCG

Tasting

Visual examination: straw yellow with beautiful intensity, with golden nuances.

Olfactory examination: the nose is elegant and composed, first delicate hints of white flowers, then fragrant of citrus and crunchy pastry aromas, con the background hints of toasted dried fruit.

Taste-olfactory examination: already at the first sip the pleasant freshness and flavor are evident, hand con hand with the structural dimensions of the wine. Good persistence.

Pairing: excellent with fish crudités, fish first and second courses.

Pnot Mosca Oil Porse SOC

Tasting

Visual examination: clear ruby red, with garnet nuances.

Olfactory examination: it begins with clear hints of red fruit, accompanied by a floral note of dried violet and a light spiciness of black pepper, followed by balsamic perceptions.

Taste-olfactory examination: fresh and with a pleasant flavor, the tasting offers light, almost shy tannins, which marry the flavor. Good persistence finale.

Pairing: ideal with red and white meat first courses.

Taverna Torrevilla is today one of the most coherent and solid realities of the Oltrepò Pavese: a century-old history that has never stopped evolving, a territory that is told through science and tradition, a community of winemakers that believes con the value of shared work. Between great Classic Method sparkling wines, sustainability projects and a modern vision of cooperation, Torrevilla confirms itself as a fundamental presence for the oenological identity of the Oltrepò Pavese.
