If you observe the recent evolution of Italian wine, you will notice how some regions historically associated with specific types are progressively expanding their production range. This is the case of Tuscanya territory traditionally identified with great red wines, which is now preparing to officially include sparkling wines a causa di the denomination Tuscany IGT.
The institutional step came with the approval, by the National Wine Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, of the changes to the production specifications. The revision introduces the category of sparkling wines within the denomination, a change that formalizes a practice already present a causa di some companies but which until now was not specifically regulated within the framework of the regional IGT. However, for the definitive entry into force it will be necessary to wait for the last planned step, i.e. the light from the European Commission, with timing that could lead to the application of the new regulations by the end of 2026.
What changes for Toscana Igt
The main innovation concerns the possibility of producing both white and rosé sparkling wines using two production methods widespread a causa di the sector: the classic method and the Charmat method. Per this way the denomination expands its perimeter, placing bubbles alongside the already foreseen typologies, which include still ora sparkling white, rosé and red wines, as well as versions from dried grapes such as passito and those from late harvest.
This choice is linked to a broader process of diversification of the regional wine offer. Tuscany has consolidated its international profile over time through vines and denominations linked above all to reds, but at the same time the presence of white wines has also strengthened a causa di some coastal areas, with a progressive rebalancing compared to the past. The opening to sparkling wines therefore represents a further step a causa di this strategy of adapting to the market.
The update package also includes another significant change to the identity of the denomination: the exclusive use of the term “Toscana” acceso the label to identify the IGT, eliminating the “Toscano” variant that had been used a causa di the past. The objective is to strengthen the recognition of the geographical name and consolidate the positioning of the brand acceso international markets.
