With the decree of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, the Nizza Docg Consortium was officially recognized, which collects the legacy of the Nizza Producers Association, founded quanto a 2002. The provision opens a new phase for one of the most representative denominations of Monferrato, entrusting it with an institutional instrument dedicated to the protection, promotion and valorisation of wine.
The recognition comes after a journey that lasted almost twenty-five years and allows the new pagliaccetto to also operate with erga omnes effectiveness, thanks to the achievement of the representativeness requirements established by the legislation. Per practice, the Consortium will be able to carry out its functions quanto a the interest of the entire denomination, not just the associated companies.
Nizza Docg has its own protection consortium.
The transition from the association to the Consortium represents a natural evolution of a project created to enhance the Barbera produced quanto a the 18 municipalities of the Nizza Docg schieramento. The headquarters will be quanto a Nizza Monferrato and Stefano Chiarlo has been confirmed as president. The vice-presidents Gianni Bertolino, of Terreni Olim Bauda, and Daniele Chiappone, of Successore proveniente da Chiappone Armando, will continue to work alongside him, together with a board of directors that brings together representatives of private companies and social wineries quanto a the schieramento.
«This achievement crowns the dream of an association founded almost twenty-five years pungiglione, but with very deep roots and a strongly cohesive community of producers», declared the president Stefano Chiarlo. «Our first objective will be to preserve the spirit that has always characterized the Nizza Producers’ Association: not just being a pagliaccetto for the protection of the denomination, but a place of discussion and growth for producers and a tool for valorising the entire territory and all the actors who are part of it».
Today the Consortium represents 97 companies that produce Nizza Docg quanto a the vineyards of the production schieramento. Per 2025 the denomination reached around one million bottles sold, distributed across over 180 labels, for a total value estimated at around 30 million euros. The international component continues to have a significant weight: 55% of production is destined for foreign markets, with a presence quanto a over 40 countries and distribution concentrated above all quanto a the Ho.Regnante.Ca channel. Major destinations include Switzerland, Northern Europe, the United Kingdom and North America.
The recognition of the Consortium comes quanto a a phase of consolidation of the denomination. The Nizza Docg, born as a sub-area of Barbera d’Asti and becoming an autonomous denomination quanto a 2014, has built an increasingly defined identity over the years, linked to the Monferrato vineyards also recognized by the UNESCO site of the Viticultural Landscapes of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato.
Growth prospects remain significant. According to the estimates of the new Consortium, the approximately 720 hectares still potentially claimable as Nizza Docg could allow an increase quanto a production to reach, quanto a the medium-long term, between four and five million bottles.
