Mamoiada: Cannonau with new perspectives

Mamoiada is a captivating town in the heart of Sardinia, situated in the stunning area of Barbagia. Here, I had the benefit of immersing myself in standard Sardinian culture and finding the regional white wine gems that make this land so special and remarkable.

Mamoiada winds through the province of Nuoro, welcomed by wild and unpolluted nature, comprised of rolling hills and vineyards that vanish into the horizon. Its charm is imbued with Mediterranean plants, from the olive groves to the fragrances of the Mediterranean scrub, and naturally, from the vineyards, custodians of the trick of this location.

The Mediterranean environment, with its hot, dry summer seasons and moderate winter seasons, develops the best conditions for growing grapes, while the temperature level variations in between day and night provide a particular intricacy that shows the character of the location.

However what makes Mamoiada really unique is its Cannonau, an experience that accepts the culture and identity of this neighborhood.

The wine makers of Mamoiada are custodians of a thousand-year-old custom and I had the enjoyment of satisfying them, listening to their stories and seeing with my own eyes the love and enthusiasm they put into their work. It was a remarkable experience through the history and culture of this location.

In addition to the distinguished wineries, 2 regional associations, Mamojà and the Association of Winemakers of Mamoiada, are devoted to the promo and preservation of regional white wines, improving the custom and oenological heritage of the area.

Under the assistance of Ruggero Mazzilli, a specialist Piedmontese agronomist focused on viticulture and oenology, the orientation towards natural has actually been embraced for several years within the 24 wineries related to Mamojà for the production of Cannonau in the vineyard. This effort saw the setup of 15 meteorological stations targeted at gathering and examining information on the regional microclimate. Seeking to the future, the objective is to properly map the area and develop a brand-new regulated denomination of origin in Sardinia.

Amongst the productions of the Mamoiada location I have “went to” the following cellars and white wines:

Cantina Ladu– Ghirada S’Ena Manna DOC Cannonau di Sardegna 2020

Cantina Muggittu– Boeli IGT Isola dei Nuraghi 2021

Cantina Osvaldo Soddu– Brulleri Ghirada Bruncu Boeli DOC Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva 2020

Francesco Mulargiu– Malarthana DOC Cannonau di Sardegna 2021

Giuliana Puligheddu– Cupanera DOC Cannonau di Sardegna 2021

Giuseppe Satta– Caramala DOC Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva 2020

Giuseppe Sedilesu– Mamuthone DOC Cannonau di Sardegna 2021

Gungui Dario– Barallibus DOC Cannonau di Sardegna 2019

Marco Canneddu– Zibbo DOC Cannonau di Sardegna 2021

Montisci– Barrosu DOC Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva Franzisca 2017

Mussennore– Mussennore DOC Cannonau di Sardegna Reserve Zesuino 2019

Tenute Bonamici– Montanaro DOC Cannonau di Sardegna 2019

Teularju– Ghirada Cara’Gonare IGT Barbagia 2019

Vigne Muzanu– Terras de Mamujada IGT Isola dei Nuraghi 2019

If you want to check out the concealed treasures of Sardinia, to which I am devoting my attention, I warmly welcome you to drop in Mamoiada, all set to invite you with a glass of Cannonau and a warm smile.
