Petrolo: wine excellence in Valdarno Superiore
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Petrolo lies in the province of Arezzo on the Chianti hills which control the Valdarno di Sopra location, traditionally acknowledged as ideal for the production of quality red wines.

Petrolo has actually been owned by the Bazzocchi-Sanjust household considering that the 1940s and is today handled by Luca Sanjust, kid of Lucia Bazzocchi-Sanjust.

The estate crosses a location of 272 hectares and is controlled by the stupendous middle ages Tower of Galatrona. The estate includes a big vacation home integrated in the very first years of the 1700s by the artist Massimiliano Soldani Benzi and 5 other farmhouses.

Spectacular view from the Galatrona Tower

The activities that Petrolo has actually been effectively performing considering that the 2nd half of the 80s are the production of great red wines and outstanding natural additional virgin olive oil, in addition to running a farmhouse in a superb common Tuscan rural setting.

After years of natural management of the olive groves (considering that the 1990s), in 2004 Petrolo deserted conventional farming even in the vineyards in favor of natural and sustainable practices. In 2016 Petrolo acquired the natural farming accreditation likewise in the management of the vineyards.

The vineyards extend for 31 hectares in the Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC, at an elevation in between 250 and 450 meters above water level, where the soil includes rock stratifications of marl, sandstone and Chianti alberese.

In the vineyards there are both native and global vines (Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Red Wine, Trebbiano and Malvasia bianca). The planting density is roughly 5,500 vines per hectare and the production per hectare is extremely minimal.

The vineyards represent genuine business crus (San Marco, Galatrona, Feriale, Lecceta, Asilo, Meletana, Casariccio, Campaccio, Pianacci, Bòggina, Medical Professional, Poggio and Lago). From them the grapes are gotten for the production of the business’s red wines, consisting of the popular Galatrona and Torrione.

Galatrona Vineyard

Galatrona is 100% Red wine by Petrolo and is gotten from the vineyard of the very same name planted in between completion of the eighties and the mid-nineties with low vitality Bordeaux clones.

Torrione, desired by Lucia Bazzocchi Sanjust in 1988 and developed then with the aid of Giulio Gambelli, represents Petrolo’s production turning point: the goal of developing red wines in the severe look for quality. Torrione is gotten from the assembly of grapes (Sangiovese, Red Wine and Cabernet Sauvignon) from all the business’s vineyards.

Campolusso is the white wine that originates from Petrolo’s Cabernet Sauvignon Cru. Found at the foot of the Galatrona tower, it is completely surrounded by woods, the resulting white wine is vinified in concrete tanks and develops in brand-new French oak barriques.

Bòggina A, a pure Sangiovese fermented and aged in terracotta amphorae from Impruneta, a hymn to the “Tuscanness” that this business never ever deserts. Notes of cherries merged with citrus tips are its typicality and the element that many makes this “inconsistent” white wine a leap into development!

And lastly the Bòggina B, spontaneous vinification with native yeasts in tonneaux and aging for over 15 months in picked French tonneaux make this Trebbiano del Valdarno a distinct things of research study and observation of how theoretical oenology typically needs to toss its hands up in front of practice special to each maker.

The special microclimate of the location, the specific structure of the soil, the mindful management of the vineyards and the meticulous operate in the cellar, where the hand of guy just looks for to boost the fruit of nature, add to the production of the outstanding Valdarno di Sopra DOC red wines.

Various fermentation and aging vessels in the Petrolo cellars

We had the satisfaction and honor of being invited by Rocco Sanjust, Luca’s kid, who has actually been following the business for a couple of years now and speaks about it as just a fan can.

With our hearts and minds, together with the internal wine maker Simone Cuccoli, we take a trip of the vineyards and get lost in the agrarian Vigna Campaccio immersed in a well-ventilated however safeguarded woody amphitheater.

Vigna Campolusso, with its sapling system and Vigna Boggina A and B are the worthwhile conclusion of our taking a trip experience to find the business’s home!

The afternoon ends with an interesting and constantly positive tasting of their most valuable referrals.
