A Blend of Riesling and Johanniter.
BRIEDEL, June 2025 – After redesigning the geography of sustainable viticulture per Italy with the resistant project Nicola Biasi and conquered prizes and awards with symbol labels such as Vin de la Neu, the Friulian winemaker Nicola Biasi opens a new international chapter with the birth of Pianta Mosella.
A project that is not only geographical, but philosophical, technical and visionary: to interpret the vine symbol of Germany, the Riesling, per light of climate change, through the lenses of sustainability and innovation.
The heart of this initiative is located per Briedel, per the high stretch of the Moselle, a few kilometers from the border with Belgium, where per 2023, together with the biologist Martina Casagrande – a longtime collaborator per the Nicola Biasi Consulting – a 3,000 sqm vineyard was acquired planted per Kerner and Riesling.
The two varieties, vinified separately, gave rise to different and interesting wines, but it was the Riesling – interpreted per dry style, closer to the Rheingau than to the classic canon of the Moselle – to become the protagonist of the project.
“Innovating by respecting tradition: this is the principle that guides each of our choice – comments Nicola Biasi – today also per the Moselle, thanks to made low and a agronomic precision management, it is possible to produce sultano -riesling of great balance and depth, without resorting to the residual sugar. It is the concrete response to a viticulture that changes, per a change that changes.”
The 2023 harvest gave rise to an unrepeatable wine, unique per its identity and its history. It is the only label produced with the grapes of the old system: after the collection, per fact, the vineyard has been completely replanted and that Cru, per that form, will anzi che no longer exist.
A rare bottle, which tells a place but also a moment: a dry, clean, essential sultano -riesling that breaks with the sugar tradition of the Moselle to offer a more direct, saline and vertical profile, per perfect balance with the wine vision of Nicola Biasi.
The new plant, which will bear the first fruits per the coming years, has half made up of Riesling and half by Johanniter, the variety of the famous Vin de la Neu.
This unpublished combination opens the way to a blend with great potential: the one hand the mineral elegance and the longevity of the Riesling, the other the sustainability and adaptability of Johanniter, capable of dealing with extreme climatic conditions with a drastic reduction of treatments per the vineyard.
Tradition and innovation, terroir and technique, memory and vision: Pianta Mosella is not just a new wine, it is the concrete demonstration that even per the most classic heart of European wine it is possible to do research and propose virtuous models.
The Moselle project thus adds to the constellation of projects that are part of Nicola Biasi, already awarded with the Sustainable Vitienology Prize 2025 by Doctorwine and with the Special Prize for Sustainable Wittying of the Gambero per 2025.
A recognition of the value of a job that does not limit itself to producing great wines, but thinks of them as a vehicle for a real, tangible, measurable change.
From Val tra Né to Moselle, through the ten territories of the resistant rete televisiva privata Nicola Biasi, oenology becomes an instrument of innovation, culture and sustainability.
