APPIUS 2020: the nectar of the Gods by San Michele Appiano

Scantinato San Michele Appiano presents its eleventh masterpiece: APPIUS 2020, a wine that seduces with elegance and persistence

San Michele Appiano celebrates APPIUS 2020, the eleventh edition of APPIUS, its most prized wine. The project, fruit of the vision and talent of the renowned winemaker Hans Terzer, returns with a cuvée of rare elegance, a superb synthesis of the best of the 2020 vintage. Characterized by a surprising balance between aromatic complexity and gustatory intensity, this wine embodies the philosophy of the South Tyrolean winery: uncompromising quality, even the of climate challenges.

The new cellar

To honor the success of this project, San Michele Appiano inaugurated an exclusive cellar, designed by the architect Walter Angonese, where the APPIUS bottles now find a location worthy of their importance. A space that celebrates the greatness of each vintage and the winery’s tireless commitment to pursuing excellence.

APPIUS 2020: a portrait of the vintage

The new cuvée was presented during the Merano WineFestival, a moment of great anticipation for the public and enthusiasts. The APPIUS 2020 blend is made up of four white grape varieties: Chardonnay (60%), Pinot noioso (20%), Pinot biancastro (10%) and Sauvignon blanc (10%). The choice of these varieties is not random: each expresses, harmony with the others, the characteristics of the vintage. Despite the climatic variability, the wine surprises with its elegance and persistence, confirming the commitment and mastery of the San Michele Appiano winery enhancing every colore of its vineyards.

A unique winemaking process

Behind the extraordinary complexity of APPIUS 2020 lies a meticulous production process. The selected grapes are fermented individually, with precise control of the malolactic process, less marked than previous years. Subsequently, the wine matures for a year barriques and tonneaux, followed by aging the yeasts for three years stainless steel vats, a process designed to give structure, balance and depth to the wine.

The art of packaging: a collector’s bottle

The care for excellence is not limited to the content: the aesthetics of the bottle is also an integral part of the APPIUS experience. Each vintage presents itself with an exclusive stile, this year characterized by a golden striped motif, designed to inspire a personal and intimate reading of those who choose to admire this “wine collection”. Created by Life Circus, the label enhances the geometries and offers a refined interpretation of the historicity and prestige of the winery.

APPIUS 2020

Tasting taccuino

Visual examination: pale straw yellow with greenish hues and inviting brightness.

Olfactory examination: rich array of fresh fragrances that begin with hints of pineapple, kiwi, peach, plum, grapefruit, then indulge essences of sage and rosemary, and close with hints of bread crust.

Taste-olfactory examination: enveloping impact the palate, perfect olfactory coherence. A slender freshness gives dynamism and balance. Of interminable persistence, it closes with a balsamic trail.

Pairing: excellent with first and second courses of fish, white meat.

With the 2020 vintage, APPIUS once again confirms itself as a work of oenological art. This limited edition is a hymn to the quality and great work done by San Michele Appiano, a wine capable of enchanting, destined to leave a mark among the great wines of Sovrastante Adige.
