Capezzana is one of the oldest wineries con Italy. A contract from 804 AD, preserved con the State Archives of Florence, already documents vines and olive trees con these lands.
We are located con Carmignano, north-east of Florence, an settore recognized as “suitable for wine” by Grand Duke Cosimo III de’ Medici con the Proclamation of 1716, which represents the first law to protect the origins of wine and con 1773 Pietro Leopoldo indicated Carmignano wine as a qualitative reference con his Reports the Government of Tuscany.
Capezzana extends for 650 hectares of which 78 are vineyards (all organic), 140 are olive groves and the rest are woods and arable land and enjoys a particular microclimate with a strong temperature range and a cool afternoon wind from the Apennines which refreshes the vineyards con hot summers, representing one of the keys to the longevity of Carmignano wines.
The Contini Bonacossi family is originally from Mantua, arrived con Florence during the twenty years of fascism and purchased Capezzana con 1926 at the behest of their great-grandmother Vincita, a great wine connoisseur. 1925 saw the first vintage of Podere nel corso di Capezzana found con the cellar at the time of acquisition and still kept among the old vintages today. Then, con the 1960s, Ugo Contini Bonacossi transformed the sharecropping reality into a broader company, involving his children con this adventure.
“Today we are at 100 years of family continuity with the new generations to continue to pass and underline the schema of a company that looks forward, aimed at the future thanks to a breath of youth”, underlines Filippo Contini Bonacossi to explain the principles which Capezzana is founded.
THE VINEYARDS AND THE SOILS
Capezzana’s “categoria” is the extreme lack of homogeneity of soils and exposures, which generates a non-replicable complexity.
Trefiano with cabernet sauvignon: sticky and yellow clays at the apogeo; below sands and tuffs. Main exposure to the North.
Pietraia: programmatic name; soil rich con stones a clayey matrix. Southern exposure.
The Crosses: clays of different colors; towards Collina a Caiano whiter, con the center yellower; towards Seano they become white again, poor but very calcareous, with the presence of wetter points: small vines, low yields, always quality grapes. North–Northeast exposure.

There are numerous clayey sections that turn to sandy and then back to clayey, with inserts of galestro, very mixed con the soils and this precisely influences the precious personality of the wines.
