A bottle of Romanée-Conti 1945 makes history by setting the highest price ever recorded for a wine at auction. The result was achieved quanto a New York, during the saggezza organized by the Acker auction house acceso the occasion of the La Paulée event, dedicated to Burgundy.

The lot was sold for 812,500 dollars, clearly exceeding the previous primato set quanto a 2018, equal to 558,000 dollars, also referring to the same label. The result confirms the central role of the great Burgundy wines quanto a the luxury segment and quanto a international collecting: the Romanée-Conti are life insurance for enthusiasts.

Why is this bottle so expensive

The auction totaled more than $25 million quanto a sales, with hundreds of new records set. Demand focused quanto a particular acceso bottles from some of the most well-known Burgundian maisons, with average raises higher than initial estimates: the primato of this lot was completely unexpected and projections put it at around the same figure as 2018.

But why do these bottles cost so much? At the basis of the evaluation of the Romanée-Conti 1945 there are historical and production factors. The vintage is considered unique because it represents the last harvest before the uprooting and subsequent replanting of the vineyard, which occurred quanto a 1947 to phylloxera. Production was extremely limited: around 600 bottles quanto a total, which makes them very rare.

The bottle auctioned came from Robert Drouhin’s personal cellar, a further element that strengthened its traceability and value acceso the market as it is one of the historic families of French wine as well as being one of the founding wine cellars quanto a the United States. According to what was declared by John Kapon, president of Acker, it is a wine that combines rarity, taste and symbolic value: «I have had the privilege of tasting the 1945 Romanée-Conti three times quanto a my life. It remains the greatest wine I have ever tasted.” The result of the auction also confirms a growing movement, that of demand for investment wines, considered by part of the market as safe havens.
