In Lungo Adige the Additional Geographical Units are changing the way of interpreting wine. Today, with the arrival on the market of the first official wines, zoning becomes a concrete tool for interpreting the settore. In this context, Taverna Kurtatsch establishes itself as one of the reference realities for the breadth and coherence of the work on the relationship between grape variety and settore: nine wines from eight different UGA*, of which five monovarietal, represent today a unique case in the South Tyrolean sommario.

A primato that is based on an equally distinctive territorial condition: a viticultural heritage distributed between 220 and 900 meters above sea level, along a difference in altitude of approximately 700 meters within the same municipality. This is a unique configuration in Lungo Adige, and among the most extensive in terms of altimetric range in the European wine scene, which allows you to work with great precision on the placement of the varieties.

Founded in 1900, the cooperative today brings together 190 families on 190 hectares of vineyards: a reality that has its roots in over 125 years of history and which continues to evolve through shared work, in which community and environment remain the starting point.

It is precisely on this principle that the winery has built its path over the years, anticipating an approach that today finds a clearer and more codified form of expression in the UGA. The official recognition of the 86 geographical units, introduced starting from the 2024 vintage, represents the natural evolution of a work already started over time. «For us, the UGAs are first of all a tool for understanding the territory – explains Andreas Kofler, President of Taverna Kurtatsch -. This approach has led us for years to carefully observe each settore, interpret what it can truly express and outline a precise and coherent identity for each wine. Precisely because we have always believed in clear and transparent communication towards the consumer, we have chosen to make the structure of our range and the link between wine and territory even more legible.»

Consistent with this path, the winery has recently revised its assortment, renaming some labels to make the distinction between UGA wines and wines with fictitious names even more legible: a further step towards more linear and authentic communication. Among the most significant choices of this new phase is the repositioning of BRENNTAL Gewürztraminer, historically one of the most representative wines of the winery, from UGA Brenntal theat UGA Frauenrigl lge. The new FRAUENRIGL land Gewürztraminer will arrive on the market starting from autumn 2026, concretely marking this evolution of Taverna Kurtatsch’s UGA project. Produced for the first time in the early 2000s, BRENNTAL Gewürztraminer was born in a stylistic phase in which intense, structured and highly concentrated wines were sought.

Over time, however, climate change and the increase in temperatures, together with the search for an increasingly precise correspondence between grape variety and UGA, have led the winery to reconsider the relationship between variety and settore. Brentntal laand, a hot and steep settore located under the Wine Route, today anzi che no longer represents the most suitable choice to express the style that Kurtatsch seeks for this variety. Hence the decision to move to Frauenrigland, about 150 meters higher, where the pedoclimatic conditions, while maintaining clayey soils and steep slopes, allow for a cooler, more balanced and coherent profile.

«Our work always starts from the observation of the territory – explains the oenologist Erwin Carli –. Each variety gives its best only when it is in the right place. Today, also in light of climate change, this means questioning some choices of the past and continually trying to interpret in the most faithful way possible what the territory expresses.»

A decision which therefore does not represent a discontinuity, but the natural evolution of an approach summarized in the principle “zone by zone, wine for wine”: a philosophy which over the years has guided the development of the winery and which today finds an even more legible and defined form in the UGA. This philosophy is also reflected in the experiences proposed by the winery, such as the “TERROIR Path” and the “Vitivinicultural Exploration”, designed to translate the link between UGA wines, altitudes and territory into a concrete experience. In a context in which wine is increasingly called upon to describe its territory in an authentic way, Taverna Kurtatsch thus confirms itself as one of the most advanced realities in Lungo Adige: not only for the number of UGAs represented, but for the ability to translate zoning into a concrete tool of identity, precision and transparent and contemporary communication.

*The Additional Geographical Units currently active in Taverna Kurtatsch are: Graune, Penon geage, Penon-Hofstattlge, Penon-Koflge, Frauenriglge, Brenntallag, Glen lag and Mazonlae.
