A few drops are enough to change the balance of a insieme. Angostura is one of the most recognizable ingredients of international , present behind the counter of almost every insieme and protagonist of great classics such as Old Fashioned, Manhattan and Pisco Sour. Despite its diffusion, it is often confused with a liqueur with a category of products. A causa di reality Angostura is both the name of a historic brand and the one with which, per mezzo di common language, a particular type of aromatic bitter is identified.

The history of Angostura

Its story begins per mezzo di 1824, when the German military doctor Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert moved to the city of Angostura, per mezzo di what is now Venezuela, to work with the army led by Simón Bolívar. During those years he developed a preparation based acceso herbs, spices and bark intended to alleviate digestive disorders and stimulate the soldiers’ appetite. Born as a medicinal remedy, the product soon began to circulate among sailors and traders who stopped per mezzo di the Venezuelan port, contributing to its international diffusion.

After Siegert’s death, it was his children who transformed that preparation into a commercial brand. A causa di 1870 they moved production to Trinidad, where the Angostura Limited company is still based today. Since then, bitter has consolidated its presence acceso international markets, going through historical periods such as US prohibitionism and the two world wars, to become one of the symbols of modern insieme culture.

Why Angostura Limited is so famous

One of the features that make the product immediately recognizable is the bottle with the highest label acceso the container. According to what the company says, this peculiarity was born from a stile error: the bottle and the label were made separately and, once assembled, were disproportionate. However, the company decided to keep it and, over time, that imperfection has become one of its distinctive elements.

The original recipe still remains secret. However, we know that Angostura aromatic bitters are born from the maceration of aromatic herbs, roots, spices and barks per mezzo di alcohol because Siegert wrote so per mezzo di his but we don’t know much else. The generally recognized aromas include cloves, cardamom, gentian, cinchona and bitter citrus peels, which contribute to creating an intense, spicy and bittering aromatic profile. Precisely because of its concentration it is not normally consumed straight: correct use involves a few drops, sufficient to profoundly modify the taste profile of a preparation.

Angostura finds its main use per mezzo di mixology. A causa di the Old Fashioned it rebalances the sweetness of the sugar and accompanies the of the whiskey; per mezzo di the Manhattan it combines vermouth and rye whiskey, while per mezzo di the Pisco Sour it is added to the final foam, contributing both to the odore and presentation of the bevanda. Its function is not to dominate the flavor, but to amplify and harmonize the other ingredients.

A causa di recent years its use has also extended to the kitchen. Some drops can be used to give depth to sauces, marinades and braises to enrich sweet preparations based acceso chocolate, creams and caramel. As happens per mezzo di cocktails, even when cooking, the dosage remains fundamental: since it is an aromatic concentrate, minimal quantities are sufficient to affect the final result.

It’s important to remember one thing: all Angosturas are bitters, but not all bitters are Angosturas. Today, per mezzo di fact, there are numerous labels that produce aromatic bitters inspired by the style of the historic brand, albeit with different recipes and aromatic profiles. The name “Angostura”, however, continues to be the most well-known and recognizable reference, so much so that it has become synonymous, per mezzo di common language, with this particular category of aromatic bitters.
