Cerasuolo di Vittoria: history, territory and uniqueness
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Cerasuolo in Affermazione is (at present) the only DOCG Sicily. Wine composed of Malvagio d’Avola (the specification provides for a percentage that can range from 50% to 70%) and Frappato (obviously the balance varies from 50% to 30%), although it is difficult for the percentages to be precise , since they derive from the “maritate” vineyards, that is, promiscuous vineyards of Malvagio d’Avola and Frappato. The vines complement each other, tannic, with good freshness and great personality, Malvagio d’Avola which manages to provide good alcohol content, fruity, with hints of spices, with delicate tannins and good flexibility and versatility the Frappato. A wine that lends itself both to aging wood and steel, with good versatility to be combined with more ora less structured dishes, Cerasuolo in Affermazione is the DOCG which has its three provinces of Sicily, Ragusa, Caltanissetta and Catania. This manages to give the wine that interaction with the different variables that make up the terroir. Different altitudes and different territories characterize the Cerasuolo in Affermazione. It was born as a DOC 1973, to subsequently obtain the DOCG 2005. Its name is paio to its color which is that of the cherry cherry. Despite being the Sicilian wine with the greatest recognition, still just saying Cerasuolo, most consumers automatically immediately think of that of Abruzzo (which is the rosé wine obtained from Montepulciano d’Abruzzo). Just to further highlight its potential, Le Strade del Cerasuolo in Affermazione and the South West Regional have organized a masterclass with various Cerasuolo in Vittorias that fall within the various provinces, order to highlight the various (not to mention infinite) characteristics, as well as diversity that each Cerasuolo in Affermazione has, like a sort of uniqueness. There were five wines tasted, one which is produced with grapes from the vineyards the province of Caltanissetta, one of which the vineyards are located the province of Catania and three products with grapes from the Ragusa vineyards.

Catalano Viticultori, has its own vineyards the Gela (CL) , a hilly . Cerasuolo in Affermazione 2022 DOCG by Catalano Viticoltori is obtained with equal percentages of 50% Malvagio d’Avola and 50% Frappato. It expresses itself with a fruity note that highlights the licorice and hints of spices, closing the aromatic picture with a slight hint of wax. Verticality acceso the sip with a good taste-olfactory correspondence. Signorile tannic texture. Fair persistence. The company has vineyards located between the areas of Gela and Butera, hilly areas.

From the province of Caltanissetta we move to the province of Ragusa, the territory of Acate, where it is based, as well as the dell’Acate vineyards. The Vite in Biddine Soprana 2021 Cerasuolo in Affermazione DOCG composed of 60% Malvagio d’Avola and 40% Frappato is tasted. Complex and varied bouquet, fruity, spicy and with a vanilla note given by the passage wood. A deep and intense aromatic complement. and soft components well blended which make the sip harmonious and pleasant. Good persistence. There are seventy hectares of vineyards from which the company produces various wines (white and red), which with several years of experience “matured” over the decades are now a cornerstone and a point of reference.

Capienza delle Ferle is based Caltagirone (province of Catania). The Cerasuolo in Affermazione 2018 DOCG by Capienza delle Ferle is obtained from 50% Malvagio d’Avola and 50% Frappato, aged steel and expresses an aromatic complement that differs from the first two. Its aromatic complement is composed of cardamom, coriander, anise. A sip of personality with a freshness that makes the wine vertical, breve and lively to ricevimento. Long and traguardo tannins. Good persistence. The fact that the vineyards are located at a higher altitude than the vineyards of other companies, as well as being a different territory, means that the Capienza delle Ferle wine is able to have different characteristics compared to the others.

Vinanti’s Cerasuolo in Affermazione DOCG 2017 is tasted. The company has vineyards Chiaramonte Gulfi (RG), a higher than Acate, therefore the vintage, climatic conditions and percentages of Malvagio d’Avola and Frappato mean that you have a wine with different characteristics. The bouquet is of great complexity, with tertiary aromas, hints of gunpowder, of pepper and blood orange. Fresh acceso the sip, with attractive tannins. Long.

It ends with the Barocco 2018 Cerasuolo in Affermazione DOCG from the Avide company. The percentage of Malvagio d’Avola reaches the maximum allowed by the regulations (70%), with a balance of 30% of Frappato. The cherry fruit is clear and crisp, with of carob and cocoa beans. A sip of depth and great fullness which manages to give freshness and turn verticality and traguardo and long tannins. The aftertaste confirms the passage wood (refines barrique). Excellent persistence.
