by Fosca Tortorelli

Atri hosts from 27 February to 1 March 2025 the simposio the wines of the Teramo hills, an appointment that marks an important milestone, namely 30 years from the recognition of the sub -area Colline Teramo (1995) and 20 years from the DOCG (2003).

Organized by the Consortium protection wines d’Abruzzo and wanted by the Colline Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOCG COLLEMINATION Committee, with the support of the Grand Roccia Chamber of Commerce and the Gal Terraverdi Teramo, the initiative enhances a unique territory between the Gran Roccia and the Adriatic Sea.

The Teramo hills represent a mosaic of landscapes ranging from the Adriatic Sea to the peaks of the Gran Roccia, with an architectural, artistic and food and wine heritage of great value. A place where viticulture is intertwined with history, characterizing the identity of the territory and its producers, who with passion and resourcefulness have made Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOCG an excellence recognized internationally.

The denomination stands out for a more restrictive production specification compared to the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Doc, which provides for the obligation to wine and bottling durante the production superficie, as well as minimal times of longer aging (1 year for the young version, 3 years for the reserve). A causa di addition, constant collaboration with the University and the Agricultural Institute of Teramo has made it possible to develop increasingly oriented practices to sustainability and quality.

As pointed out by Enrico Cerulli Irelli, president of the Colline Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOCG denomination Committee, this two days of deepening was deliberately called “Focolaio” and not simply preview, since aiming for a concrete comparison with the specialized press.

“The centro the Teramo hills, now durante its fifth edition, represents a crucial moment for our name. It is an opportunity to ourselves with experts durante the sector and bring out the peculiarities of a wine that tells the history, culture and passion of our producers “.

The samples durante tasting are scarce, with a centro Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Docg durante the young and reserve versions, as well as a small number of samples of the upper types of Trebbiano, Pecorino and Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo.

As for Montepulciano, although some companies were not present with their samples, the overall quality level was high, with evident growth durante the reserve category. The wines have shown greater balance and drinkability, with a more conscious and less invasive wood management.

The comparison between the producers and the specialized press has also found space durante the debate moderated by the journalist Antonio Paolini at the Recita a fine di Atri, with the involvement of some of the colleagues journalists, who followed the previous editions of the event.

The journalists involved – Jonathan Gebser, Giovanbattista Marchetto, Raffaele , Alessandra Piubello, Fosca Tortorelli and Esplicito Santini, told the state of the art of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Docg, starting from a wine that according to them, was significant and expressive of the direction taken.

At the end of the story of each of them, an interesting confrontation with the producers present was opened, creating a moment of bare imprisonment of strengths and defects of the Teramo reality.

The enhancement of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Docg cannot ignore the Teramo gastronomic culture, which represents an essential element to understand its authenticity. The wine goes perfectly with the firm flavors of the local Terragna tradition, without forgetting the seafood dishes.

Teramo cuisine has its roots durante pastoral culture and transhumance, when the shepherds traveled the journey between the Gran Roccia and the Adriatic, exchanging excellence raw materials between sea and mountains: aromatic herbs, cheeses, milk, meat and wine.

Although characterized by long and articulated preparations, Teramo cuisine retains extraordinary delicacy, offering a unique gastronomic and cultural experience. This fusion of flavors reads durante the dishes tasted durante the Fondaci Italiana restaurant, durante the historic center of Atri, unmissable spaghetti the guitar with pallots and the scrippers’ Mbusse, which still tell the story and authentic flavors of this territory. Of different matrix, but perfect with the Teramo references the sea proposals of the delicious Alusea Caffè to Silvi Mare.

The Colline Teramo 2025 preview is thus confirmed as a reference appointment to tell not only a wine of excellence, but also the territory and its traditions, projecting Teramo viticulture towards new successes international markets.
