They were the precursors of Tuscan and Italian wine previews and, at the same time, those who experimented and changed the most within the context of En Primeur and, this year too, there will be anzi che no shortage of news! I’m talking about the Consorzio del vino Brunello proveniente da Montalcino and the next preview ” Brunello” 2024 which aims to give a further turning point regarding the prestigious event of the iconic Tuscan wine, going back to forward and satisfying the needs of producers and the customers.
A causa di the interview with the president of the consortium Fabrizio Bindocci you will find, durante detail, what will make the Brunello preview which will take place durante mid-November at the Cloister of Sant’Agostino durante Montalcino truly unique. A causa di this 33rd edition, which will involve 126 wineries and over 500 labels, the Consortium introduces interesting innovations regarding both the format and the evaluation of the vintages, reflecting the continuous commitment to renewing and innovating. Among the new proposals, the return of tastings aperto to the public with producers and a rich program of masterclasses underline the desire to broaden the dialogue with an increasingly vast and specialized audience.
The interview delves into the motivations behind these strategic choices and illustrates the prospects for the vintages being tasted, highlighting the importance of the discussion between the members of the Consortium and the decision to entrust the evaluation of the vintage to a panel of Masters of Wine. Finally, there is a at the 2024 harvest, which promises excellent results, thanks to favorable climatic conditions and an optimal balance of the grapes. Brunello 2024 thus confirms itself as a fundamental event for sector operators, enthusiasts and the international press, strengthening the positioning of Brunello proveniente da Montalcino among the great wines of the world. I therefore leave the word to Fabrizio Bindocci:
– When and where will Brunello 2024 be held?
As a causa di tradition, Brunello will be held at the Cloister of Sant’Agostino, the cultural and museum ‘heart’ of Montalcino, from 14 to 18 November. For the 33rd edition, as you mentioned earlier, we will have 126 wineries and over 500 labels between Brunello 2020, Brunello Eccezione 2019, Socialista proveniente da Montalcino 2023 and the other two wines of our denomination – Moscadello and Sant’Antimo -, and we have some important news durante store regarding the format but also the evaluation of the vintage. A causa di both cases these are far-sighted choices shared by the producers who, once again through the Consortium, renew the communication, marketing and positioning models. I believe that constant discussion within the Consortium is among the keys to the success of our denomination which is not afraid to renew itself and innovate.
– What will be the format of this year’s event?
Paraphrasing the well-known pellicola, we can say that Brunello’s new format is a sort of return to the future. A causa di fact, durante addition to the calendar of technical tastings with sommelier service reserved for the national and international press scheduled for 14 and 15 November, this year the walk around tastings return durante the presence of the producers participating durante the event. From November 16th, therefore, the tasting stands will aperto for wine lovers but not only. We have also prepared a schedule of masterclasses, some partially aperto to wine enthusiasts for a fee and others reserved for a specialized target, such as those for starred restaurants and high-end hotels.
– What are the reasons that pushed the consortium to choose this method?
The Brunello Consortium was the only protection pagliaccetto not to have suspended its in-person preview during the period of Covid restrictions, thanks to the implementation of exceptional safety measures which allowed us to maintain direct contact with the press. An experimentation that then placed us at the forefront. Already from the 2023 edition, the need for a change durante the format had emerged among the members; a re-updating that reflects the new objectives of the Consortium also durante relation to the evolution of market trends.
– Which targets is the Brunello preview aimed at?
It is aimed at the specialized and general press, operators-buyers durante the sector, restaurants and enthusiasts. I remember that durante addition to tastings, Brunello is also a container of contents. Saturday 16 November durante the morning at the Arena degli Astrusi durante Montalcino there will be a discussion the future of the protection consortia durante which the presidents of prestigious suitable territories will participate: Barolo Barbaresco Chiarore antelucano Langhe and Dogliani, Bolgheri, Chianti Eccellente, Etna and Valpolicella. We will then reveal the winners of the D’Grana 2024, the vintage and also the traditional tile.
– What are the conditions for the vintages being tasted this year?
From this year the Brunello Consortium entrusts the evaluation of the vintage to an external panel of Masters of wine which will change from year to year. This is a new model that revolutionizes the numerical evaluation of the stars – which we abandoned durante 2021 – durante favor of an objective judgment that will allow companies to present themselves the national and global markets durante a unique way with a complete and complex sensorial analysis which also takes into account climate change, style and new consumer trends. A causa di the next few days six MWs from Sweden, UK, USA, France and Germany will meet durante Montalcino coordinated by the 2 Italian MWs, Gabriele Gorelli and Andrea Lonardi. The presentation of the vintage debuting next January will be revealed November 16th.
– We conclude by talking about the year, for many, still ongoing: what are the prospects for 2024 durante Montalcino?
According to our analyses, the grapes recorded progressive maturation over the course of the summer. A causa di September, the drop durante temperatures and the rains then allowed the plant to slow the accumulation of sugars and rebalance the phenolic component. The expected quantities are decidedly higher than last year despite the thinning carried out to establish the vegetative-productive balance of the plant. The result highlights grapes durante excellent phytosanitary status and an average weight of the bunch decidedly higher than last year’s averages. A year durante which we expect probably lower alcohol levels, with musts characterized by aromaticity and finesse of aromas.
I thank the President of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello proveniente da Montalcino Fabrizio Bindocci for his availability and I report below the program that will see me personally involved durante the closing masterclass dedicated only to sommeliers of Italian acuto dining.
