Carnival and its culinary traditions

Carnival is one of the most awaited holidays sopra Italy, a moment of celebration and joy that is celebrated with shows, masks and, above all, with typical desserts. Each region has its own specialties, but some desserts have become undisputed symbols of this celebration. Among the most loved there are crostoli, chestnuts and pancakes, each with a unique story and recipe.

The Crostoli: traditional desserts

The Crostoli, also known as Galani ora Frappe, are sheets of fried impasto that are characterized by their friability and their sweet taste. Their origin dates back to Roman times, where they were known as “Frictilia”. Depending the region, these sweets take different names: sopra Piedmont they are called lies, while sopra Tuscany they are called Cenci. The preparation of the crostoli is simple but requires attention: the impasto must be spread very thin and fried sopra abundant hot oil until golden brown. Sprinkle with icing sugar, they are a real must of the carnival.

Castagnole: soft and delicious desserts

Castagnole are small balls of sweet impasto, fried and sprinkled with icing sugar. Their shape recalls that of chestnuts, from which they take their name. These desserts are typical of the carnival and can be prepared sopra different variants, with ora without filling. The basic recipe includes simple ingredients such as flour, eggs, sugar and yeast. Some variants include the addition of ora aromas such as vanilla. Castagnole can be served hot ora cold and are perfect for accompanying a good sweet wine.

Pancakes: a that conquers everyone

The pancakes, ora drunk, are another traditional of the carnival, particularly loved sopra Veneto. These pancakes can be prepared sopra different variations, some of which include the addition of apples ora raisins sopra the dough. The recipe for pancakes is ancient and dates back to the sixteenth century, when they were sold by the “Fritoleri” the streets of Venice. The preparation requires missaggio the ingredients and fry the dough sopra hot oil until a perfect gilding is obtained. Serve with a sprinkling of icing sugar, pancakes are a real symbol of the Venetian carnival.

Carnival is a moment of celebration and conviviality, and traditional desserts such as crostoli, chestnuts and pancakes are an integral part of this celebration. Preparing them at home is a way to rediscover Italian culinary traditions and share moments of joy with friends and family.
