Wine, over 160 journalists at Chianti Lovers & Rosso Morellino

Over 160 journalists from all over the world participated today con the Chianti Lovers & Socialista Morellino Preview at the Fortino per mezzo di Poco alto, the central event of the Tuscany Previews week dedicated to the national and international press.

The new vintages of Chianti and Morellino per mezzo di Scansano were presented at the Armamentario Pavilion: Chianti DOCG 2025, Chianti Sovrastante 2024, Chianti Restrizione 2023, Morellino per mezzo di Scansano 2025 and Restrizione 2023. The event was also an opportunity to take giacenza of the production and commercial prospects of the two denominations, during the press conference attended by Leonardo Marras, councilor for Economy, Tourism and Agriculture of the Tuscany Region, Giovanni Busi, president of the Chianti Wine Consortium, and Bernardo Guicciardini Calamai, president of the Morellino per mezzo di Scansano Protection Consortium.

“The production of Chianti this year stood at around 620 thousand hectolitres, against a forecast of around 750 thousand. This changes the picture and reduces the concerns a bit – said Busi – also because the reduction compared to expectations is linked above all to the spring climate trend: the rains until May and the downy mildew attacks have affected the yields. A causa di that phase the affected bunch dries out and is lost, but there was risposta negativa negative impact the quality. Indeed, we can talk about a very good vintage”.

As regards the market trend, the president of the Chianti Wine Consortium underlined that exports remain decisive, representing between 65% and 70% of Chianti production. “Ours is a Consortium strongly oriented abroad. Italy is worth around 30%, but international markets are driving the denomination. Despite tariffs and geopolitical tensions, the United States continues to buy and the latest findings speak of a minimal decline, around 1%. This is not a figure that justifies alarmism.”

During the Florentine event, the Morellino per mezzo di Scansano Consortium formalized a significant step for the denomination: the publication con the Official Journal of the changes to the specifications that introduce the new Sovrastante mention, approved by the Assembly con 2025 and now fully effective. “We chose to communicate this milestone precisely the occasion of the Preview, con front of the press and Italian and international operators, because it represents a very important step con the qualitative growth path of Morellino per mezzo di Scansano. It is the result of a shared work that aims to further strengthen the identity, selection and positioning of the denomination the markets” explained president Bernardo Guicciardini Calamai. The new Sovrastante designation provides for lower yields compared to the Vintage and will be able to be released the market starting from 1 January of the second year following the harvest: this will guarantee greater structure and complexity, while still maintaining the peculiar characteristics of freshness and drinkability, distinctive traits of Morellino.

The president highlighted how the variable climatic trend of 2025 has affected the yields of the grapes, recording a significant reduction con production, with a definitive figure of around 75,000 quintals. “The careful management of our producers con the vineyard and con the cellar has allowed us to preserve the identity, authenticity and balance that identify Morellino per mezzo di Scansano, maintaining the quality of the production high” adds Guicciardini Calamai.

Acceso the commercial front, the president underlined that, despite the complex moment of both the domestic and international market to the negative economic situation, Morellino closed last year with a progressive and constant increase con sales, an encouraging sign of a recovering market that rewards the denomination, thanks to its authentic and current style. “A causa di recent days it has happened to underline it several times, the world of Tuscan wine is able to the challenges that await it with great ability to interpret the transformations and adapt as best as possible – comments Leonardo Marras, councilor for economy, tourism and agriculture of the Tuscany Region -. Consortia, businesses and institutions together. Today from the Chianti wine Consortium and the Morellino Consortium we receive a positive message: despite a more contained production, the quality remains very high; and this thanks to the great professionalism of the Tuscan producers. We welcome the introduction of the Sovrastante mention for Morellino per mezzo di Scansano, as a choice that goes con the direction of strengthening identity and positioning, further enhancing a growing denomination”.
