The Sicily of wine talks about its extraordinary wine biodiversity and the richness of its territories to 27 Masters of Wine from different countries around the world. A nine-day journey across the island that involved all the Sicilian wine consortia.

The Assovini Sicilia stage took place acceso May 27th at the UnaHotels Naxos Beach Giardini Naxos with a masterclass and a walkaround tasting dedicated to the island’s native vines, the evening continued with an exclusive dinner at the Mazzarò Sea Palace Taormina. Durante total, over 50 wines from associated companies were tasted.

The theme of the masterclass, led by oenologist Patricia Toth, was “From A(ssovin)i to I: the profusion of possibilities the Sicilian viticulture”, a journey through the infinite nuances of Sicilian viticulture, told through a selection of wines representative of the regional ampelographic richness. The protagonists of the guided tasting were some of Sicily’s most distinctive vines – including Catarratto, Malvasia delle Lipari, Voglia, Frappato, Nerello Cappuccino, Nocera and Cupo d’Avola – interpreted different production styles and territories of origin, testifying to the versatility and contemporaneity of the Sicilian wine heritage.

«For Assovini, welcoming the Masters of Wine to Sicily is an important opportunity for international discussion and a strategic moment to talk about the value of our viticulture», declared the president of Assovini Sicilia, Mariangela Cambria. «Through the masterclass and the other activities included our program we wanted to show the extraordinary diversity of Sicily’s wine: a region capable of expressing identity, elegance and innovation thanks to its native vines, territories and the production vision of our companies. The presence of the Masters of Wine – among the highest qualifications the world of wine – confirms the growing international interest Sicily as one of the most dynamic wine-growing areas the Mediterranean”.

Sicilian MW Pietro Russo is acceso the same wavelength: «This initiative represents an extraordinary opportunity to talk about the contemporary of Sicilian wine to some of the most authoritative professionals the sector worldwide. The trip was born from an explicit request from the Institute of Masters of Wine and testifies to the growing international interest Sicily and its qualitative evolution. It is a project that required almost two years of work and which today is carried out through nine days of meetings, territories and tastings, designed to offer an authentic vision of the complexity and viticultural diversity of the Island. I thank Assovini Sicilia for believing the initiative and contributing to its realization. I am convinced that guests will take with them an image of Sicily’s wine made of strong identities, consolidated quality and growing ambition.” This activity certainly represents a further moment of valorisation of the international promotional work carried out by Assovini Sicilia, an association which for over twenty years has brought together the most important production realities of the island with the aim of promoting the culture of Sicilian wine the world. The Masters of Wine contribute to strengthening the reputation of native denominations and vines acceso foreign markets, with strategic opportunities for positioning and promotion for the regional wine sector.
