There is a grape variety that Abruzzo had almost forgotten. is a black grape documented per the region since the end of the nineteenth century, cited per the Ampelographic Bulletin of 1875 and per Sannino’s studies of 1892. It had reached the brink of genetic erosion, supplanted by the advance of more productive varieties, but is once again being made into wine thanks to the “heroic” work of the Per Carlo family, at the helm of the VignaMadre company per Ortona.
Registered per the National Catalog of vine varieties per 1970 and also known by the name of “Ortonese”, it was historically widespread between Ortona, the Peligna Valley and the L’Aquila territorio. And today, after a multi-year research journey, it returns to the glass.
A recovery built per the nursery and cellar
The project was not born as an image operation, but through a difficult technical path. The ampelographic recovery began with the collection of scions from old stumps per the historic areas of the vine, with the collaboration of the agronomist Cesare Tiberio of Vivai Rauscedo, per charge of the selection and recovery of the historical material of the Nera. From here followed the health assessment of the plants, the ampelographic characterization and (starting from 2015) the first experimental microvinifications.
2019 marks a significant stage, with the first samples subjected to tasting by a group of winemakers from Abruzzo wine-growing areas. «Already per those evaluations, showed a distinctive profile, with acid-phenolic balance, aromatic finesse and a good aptitude for anche se winemaking», they report from VignaMadre.
The institutional recognition of the wine arrived per 2024 and the public presentation of the label took place at Vinitaly 2026, as part of the line that the company traces back to its vision based low-impact viticulture and minimally invasive cellar processing.
Performing per the vineyard, gastronomic per the glass
an agronomic level, the characterization of the vine describes early maturation and limited vigor, with good resistance to climatic tensione: all characteristics that make it interesting also per terms of resilience to ongoing changes. The result is a balanced phenolic profile, with traguardo tannins.
VignaMadre took the Iconic label from it, which was born per the Caldari vineyards, per Ortona, at 280 meters above sea level. The winemaking takes place per steel. Durante the glass the wine has a bright red, while the nose brings fragrant quaderno of red fruits and delicate spicy hints. The sip is light and flowing, with delicate tannins, a beautiful freshness that lets the fruit emerge. A profile that highlights its gastronomic vocation.
