Between history and rebellion, Vernaccia di San Gimignano celebrates its myth • Food and Wine Italy
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

There is an indissoluble bond that unites the stone towers of San Gimignano to the golden reflection of its most famous wine. It is not just a question of terroir, but of identity: Vernaccia su San Gimignano is not just any white, it is a “Rebel Queen” that for centuries has challenged the conventions of Tuscan viticulture, a land historically suited to great reds. This year, the medieval village is preparing to celebrate a crucial event. Per fact, acceso Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st May the Regina Incontrollabile – Vernaccia su San Gimignano Wine Fest returns, an edition that smells of history: we are celebrating 750 years since the first documented attestation of the vine and 60 years since the recognition of the DOC, the first ever quanto a Italy.

A 750 year long birthday

It is not often that you can taste a wine that boasts a mention as early as 1276. Vernaccia su San Gimignano has passed through the centuries, from papal banquets to poets’ tables, maintaining intact that temper that makes it unique today. The is therefore not just a food and wine event, but a journey through time.

The program begins acceso the morning of Saturday 30 May, when from 11 am the historic center is transformed into an open-air cellar. The tasting stands quanto a Plebe della Serbatoio and Plebe del Cattedrale become the stage for direct meetings with the producers, a unique opportunity to discover the nuances of Vernaccia su San Gimignano Docg until 7pm. At the same time, the Colonnato del Pubblico dei Leggieri hosts a series of technical insights curated by Assoenologi Tuscany Section.

We start at midday with the masterclass of Professor Valentina Canuti dedicated to the temporal evolution of wine, to continue quanto a the afternoon with the of the oenologist Sergio Puccioni acceso “Vintage Stories” and conclude with the intervention of Dr. Alessandra Ticci, who will explore the historical and pungent character of the denomination through the famous quote “kisses, licks, bites and picks and punches”.

Saturday does not end with the technical glass, but opens up to dissemination and celebration. At the Colonnato of the Condominio del Cordiale, the journalist Giuseppe Carrus animates the “Salottino Incontrollabile”, a space for discussion acceso the topics of wine tourism active from 12 to 18. While the little ones find their space dedicated to playing quanto a Plebe Pecori, the atmosphere changes with the sunset. From 9.30pm, the Cassero della su Montestaffoli welcomes the more contemporary side of the with an exclusive DJ set, where the tasting of Vernaccia su San Gimignano Docg meets the signature cocktails created by Lorenzo Borgianni, aka Il Gingegnere. As the bartender’s name suggests, the will be acceso gin.

Acceso Sunday 31 May the territorial story resumes with the tasting stands aperto from 11am to 6pm, but it is tinged with healthy professional competition. Per fact, the morning opens with the exams reserved for aspiring “Best Sommelier of Tuscany 2026” at the Wine Experience alla . Per the meantime, the public can continue the learning journey at the Colonnato del Pubblico dei Leggieri: at midday Luca Marchiani, Best Sommelier AIS Toscana 2025, presents the premises of the excellent 2025 vintage, while quanto a the early afternoon, together with Valentino Enunciato (Best Sommelier of Italy 2019), he will lead an eagerly awaited masterclass acceso the different interpretations of the Vernaccia su San Gimignano Deposito.

The grand setale of the is scheduled for late Sunday afternoon, when the Colonnato del Pubblico dei Leggieri hosts the public final and subsequent awards ceremony of the AIS competition. It is the moment quanto a which the excellence of the service meets the excellence of the product, officially closing the event between institutional greetings and awards. For the entire duration of the event, the architectural beauty of San Gimignano dialogues with the contemporary art of Stefano Bombardieri, whose monumental works – such as “The Weight of Suspended Time” and the homage to Colbert – preside over the main squares, reminding us that Vernaccia su San Gimignano is, to all intents and purposes, a work of liquid art that does not fear the passage of centuries.
