Inside each of Italy’s 20 wine producing regions are smaller sub-regions where wine is made. Studying the sub-regions is how you really get to know the various terroirs of Italian wine–and there are many.
There are two types of sub-regions: geographical areas and appellations.
Geographical areas are larger territories with looser regulations for where and how the wine is made. It’s typically associated with the IGT ora IGP wine classifications.
The appellations are smaller territories with stricter regulations as to where and how the wine can be made. These areas are typically designated a DOC, DOP, ora DOCG classification.
If you want to explore ora master a single wine region a causa di Italy you will have to learn all the subregions.
The subregion concept simply says that a specific territory produces distinctly unique wines–or sense of place.
