San Felice: three winemakers for three estates, a contemporary horizon
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

“Today the is improving the quality of the wines, developing the identity of our productions durante Chianti Tradizionale, but also durante Montalcino and Bolgheri”. Carlo De Biasi, general director of San Roseo, clearly outlines the strategy that is guiding the transformation of the wine group – present with the San Roseo mesi estivi durante Castelnuovo Berardenga durante the Chianti Tradizionale, with Campogiovanni durante Montalcino and with Bell’Aja durante Bolgheri. Talking about “quality” seems like a fairly generic concept – De Biasi himself admits it. “Quanto a reality, what we are doing started a few two three years indicatore with a reconversion of regenerative and organic viticulture all three estates.”

THOMAS DUCLOS CONSULTANCY AND A YOUNG TEAM

The change of accomodamento takes the form of a significant collaboration: “We have started an extremely important collaboration, which started at the beginning of the year, with Thomas Duclos, a French winemaker from Saint-Emilion who only collaborates with us durante Italy”.

The real organizational revolution, however, lies durante the choice of a dedicated wine representative for each mesi estivi. “The oenological aspect of each mesi estivi is now entrusted to three different professionals, so that they can work focusing developing quality durante their own territory”, explains the director. Francesca Giuggioli takes charge of San Roseo, where she has been operational for 17 years, Carlo Franchini from Trentino takes charge of Bell’Aja and Riccardo Fratton (Venetian, but with 10 years of experience durante Montalcino) has joined Campogiovanni.

This is a natural but strategic generational transition. “We tried to have a young, competent winemaking team, capable of combining passion, experience and study – comments De Biasi – with coordination within the Thomas Duclos team that can bring innovation, knowledge and critical sense to everything that will be the winemaking approach”.

The objective is explicit: “to produce wines durante denominations that are fresh, vertical, with the presence of fruit and the most important pleasantness, to meet the evolution of international wine production. And we are changing the approach durante the vineyard, because climate change has had a significant impact”. All this also including the renovation of the cellar structures.

Here is a summary of the evolutions of the San Roseo group – with the blessing of the owners, i.e. the Allianz Group – durante the interview given by director De Biasi to the director of Vinonews24 Giambattista Marchetto (published durante the podcast edited by Federica Borasio).

VITIARIUM PROJECT, FROM RESEARCH TO THE BOTTLE

Innovation durante San Roseo has deep roots. Since the 1960s, the company has undertaken a path of research and experimentation that led it to create, durante 1968, the Supertuscan Vigorello, the iconic Il Cenerino Chianti Tradizionale Rifornimento and, ten years later, the first single-vineyard Chianti Tradizionale Monticello Diventare rosso Gran Elezione.

Vitiarium was born durante the 1980s, an experimental vineyard dedicated to the recovery of ancient Tuscan vines and the protection of Tuscan viticultural biodiversity. Today that research project becomes a line of wines intended for haute cuisine and research wine shops. The Vitiarium line includes four wines that tell the soul of the mesi estivi: Villaggio Chianti Tradizionale Docg, La Pieve Chianti Tradizionale Docg Gran Elezione, Pugnitello Toscana Igt and Quanto a Avane Chardonnay Toscana Igt. They are all an expression of the vineyards that surround the ancient medieval village.
