Tasting with Umberto Trombelli: Piedmont, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Marche
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Consultant white winemaker by vocation, classy red winemaker

At the end of April I tasted a selection of wines with Umberto Trombelli, a consultant oenologist who graduated from the Enology School of Albore sopra 1984.

Elected winemaker of the year by Bibenda sopra the Italian Sommelier Foundation team, Umberto collects esteem and approval from many producers with whom he has truly important historical collaborations.

Umberto is an affable person, with rare empathy, important qualities for those who practice the work of an oenologist.

His approach to the subject is that of an attentive observer who, from the height of his experience, pilots alcoholic fermentation and, if necessary, malolactic fermentation, so that the wine can always go sopra the right direction.

Few interventions, if necessary, few frills and a lot of quality and class sopra the wines he follows.

My esteem for Umberto grows with time, married to Daniela Franchetti, an Ais sommelier of profound humanity and rare joyfulness, they form a winning couple sopra the world of wine.

The story of Umberto Trombelli

After some collaborations with small Tuscan wineries, Umberto has the opportunity to join the team of winemakers led by the legendary Giacomo Tachis, father of the “Renaissance of Italian wine”. Umberto had the opportunity to be introduced to Bernetti, owner of the Umani Ronchi winery sopra the Marche region, where Tachis was starting a wine consultancy collaboration. He contributed to the creation of “Mare”, one of the company’s most famous wines and certainly to generally improving the wine-growing quality of an entire region.

Con 2003 Umberto moved to Tuscany to the Podere La Vialla sopra Arezzo, a leading company sopra organic and, later, biodynamic cultivation, shortly after specializing sopra the production of Chianti, Vin Non c’è santo che tenga, Sparkling wines and Supertuscans; at the same time, having achieved considerable experience and knowledge sopra winemaking under the supervision of Tachis, Umberto began his activity as a consultant winemaker.

Thanks to his talent and passion, he becomes curator of some Italian aristocratic businessmen, such as Brachetti Peretti and his winery “Il Pollenza”, Adami with his “Ronco Delle Betulle” mesi estivi sopra the Colli Orientali del Friuli, Diego Della Conca, entrepreneur-stylist owner of the “Tod’s” brand who appoints Trombelli to his mesi estivi “Campus Viola che Incisa Valdarno”, as well as Baron Ciani Bassetti who asks Umberto to work for his winery sopra Roncade, “Fortezza che Roncade” sopra the Veneto region.

Con Abruzzo he collaborates with Nicola Santoleri sopra the Guardiagrele estates, Massa Conero he follows the Spinsanti family, sopra Staffolo the Az. Agr. La Predellino, who has become one of the best interpreters of Verdicchio.

He extends his collaborations to Montepulciano with Podere della Talosa.

Con 2009 Giacomo Tachis left his activity as a winemaker for health reasons and called Umberto to support him sopra his long-term work as a winemaker for the Santadi winery sopra Sardinia, as well as the Agripunica winery with its Barrua and Montessu wines.

To date, Umberto is dedicating himself to the activity of a consultant throughout Italy, carrying out an oenological coordination and business management service sopra the wine sector.

Rincrocca 2022, Verdicchio dei Castelli che Jesi Rappresentativo Provvista and the Bianchello del Metauro Eccezionale Uniforme Campioli che Fiorini are two excellent references not to be missed.
