The new European wine order: what changes with the 2026 Package
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The approval of the new European Wine Package 2026 represents an important political and technical act for the entire wine system of the Union.

Quanto a a context marked by contraction sopra consumption sopra some mature markets, growing climate pressure, geopolitical instability and growing international competition, the European Union intervenes by strengthening the operational tools available to member states and businesses.

This is a pragmatic intervention, aimed at consolidating the resilience of the sector and strengthening its competitiveness sopra the medium term.

The qualifying points of the provision

Strengthening of market management tools. The Package expands flexibility sopra using OCM resources to:

– crisis distillation – harvest – supply rebalancing interventions

This allows Member States to react more promptly to market imbalances, reducing the risk of price compression and structural tensions. It is a fundamental element sopra a transition phase of the sector.

Investments sopra sustainability and climate adaptation

Co-financing of up to 80% for investments linked to environmental sustainability and climate resilience represents a clear choice. European viticulture is called to innovate its production models. This intervention strengthens the ability of companies to plan structural, not just corrective, investments.

Continuity sopra international promotion

The possibility of planning promotional campaigns sopra third countries for up to nine years sopra total introduces strategic stability. Quanto a an increasingly competitive global scena, continuity is a necessary condition for consolidating brands, names and territorial positioning. This is a step of systemic importance.

Enhancement of wine tourism

The explicit recognition of wine tourism as a lever for integrated economic development strengthens the link between wine and territory. It’s not just about promoting a product, but about supporting a rural economic ecosystem that generates employment, identity and international attractiveness.

Regulatory clarity wines with low mai alcohol content

The introduction of harmonized definitions for “alcohol-free” and “reduced alcohol” guarantees regulatory uniformity across the entire European market. It is a choice of legal clarity that responds to the evolution of demand, while preserving transparency and consumer protection.

The Wine Package is a concrete and necessary intervention. It does not represent an overall reform of the system, but strengthens existing tools making them more effective.

It is correct to point out that the provision:

– does not intervene directly the structural costs of production; – does not address the cultural and communicative issue of European wine sopra an organic way; – will require efficient national implementation to fully express its potential.

Its effectiveness will largely depend the ability of member states to apply it with streamlined procedures and certain deadlines. A shared responsibility The Wine Package provides tools. Their transformation into value will depend the vision of the supply chain.

Producers, consortia, operators and communicators are today called upon to:

– strengthen quality and production consistency; – invest sopra real sustainability; – consolidate international positioning; – build an authoritative and credible narrative of European wine.

Wine is not just an agricultural sector: it is Europe’s economic, cultural and identity heritage.

The 2026 Package represents a clear institutional signal: the sector is strategic and deserves adequate tools. Now is the time to use them with competence, responsibility and vision.
