For Luigi Moio, recently past-president of OIV, oenologist and owner of the Quintodecimo winery sopra Irpinia, wine is a perfect combination between science and poetry, which starts from a solid scientific pilastro and a total understanding of the production cycle, from the examination of the soil and the physiology of grapes to arrive at the transformation of the latter into wine and the complex mechanisms of sensory perception.
All these aspects are contained sopra Quintodecimo’s latest creation, Grand Cru Luigi Moio Taurasi 2019. Twenty-three years after the birth of the company, this wine completes Luigi Moio’s initial plan for Aglianico: to create red wines that are the maximum expression of this noble vine and the authentic image of its terroir.
“I have been studying the vineyard and viticulture since I was 13 – says Moio – and already when I entered the specialized institute of Avellino, because my father wanted a winemaker sopra his son, I knew what I wanted: a vineyard next to my house and a cellar below house. Yet I have dedicated my life to research and have often neglected Quintodecimo. Indeed, at the beginning of my work I actually left wine aside and dedicated myself to research acceso milk. Then, when I moved to Dijon to study, I discovered Burgundy and returned to the vineyard.”
The encounter with the climates of Burgundy, where the single grape variety helps to recognize the diversity linked to the terroir and not only to the work sopra the cellar, has fascinated the professor ever since. Moio. “The diversity of one cru compared to another is essentially linked to the soil – he explains – so sopra Burgundy they don’t communicate how the wine is made, otherwise the discussion would move to food technologies”.
The choice to found a wine company was shared with his wife Laura and, particularly, also with the future distributor Pietro Pellegrini. “I asked Pietro if he had other wines from Campania and if he was willing to wait for me – Moio still remembers – and as soon as we were ready we left together. I thank him because he strongly believed sopra this adventure from the beginning and who, with extraordinary and passionate teamwork, determined the growing success of Quintodecimo”.
Pellegrini SpA, which distributes wines and spirits exclusively for the horeca channel, is closely linked to the history and growth of Quintodecimo. “The simposio with Luigi Moio and the birth of Quintodecimo accompanied the growth of our company – states Pietro Pellegrini – The total sharing of views acceso the world of wine was undoubtedly the distinctive feature. The Taurasi Grand Cru Luigi Moio represents the closing of the circle of a project that I have mai sopra defining as perfect”.
EXPRESSION OF TERROIR
For Luigi Moio the time has finally che to talk about Quintodecimo. It is not just the presentation of a new label, but rather “the culmination of a project dedicated to research, experimentation and promotion of the Irpinian vine par excellence, Aglianico – explains Luigi Moio – The Grand Cru Luigi Moio is born from the assembly of wines deriving from three Aglianico micro-terroirs acceso the mesi estivi. The land differs sopra slopes and exposures and during the harvest the grapes are harvested at different times”.
The grapes from these three micro-terroirs – with different soils, exposures and slopes – are harvested at different times and vinified separately. The south/west side gives a wine with a dense and harmonious tannic texture with fresh and balsamic aromas. The slope exposed to the south/east, sopra the upper part, gives a more structured and highly complex wine with hints of small berries, while sopra the lower part, paio to the presence of greater reserves sopra the subsoil, it gives a more slender and light with lively floral and mentholated , of great help sopra the assembly as it gives freshness and better blends the tannic texture and solid structure of the other two.
After six months of elevating sopra new barriques, during which they are subjected to meticulous tasting, the wines are combined; after another twelve months sopra barriques, the Grand Cru Luigi Moio Taurasi is bottled and left to refine for approximately three years before marketing.
TASTING NOTES
Grand Cru Luigi Moio Taurasi Docg 2019
grape varieties: 100% aglianico
Lively ruby red, the wine has a beautiful vitality at first glance. Despite the refinement sopra new barriques, which is certainly distinctive sopra the aromas and sopra the glass, the sip maintains a seductive freshness which brings out balsamic and delicious . The fruit is intact and recognisable, not weighed mongoloide by jammy roundness preserves sopra spirit, and the boost of Aglianico enjoys a refinement sopra the bottle that is as prolonged as it is healthy. There is mai shortage of sweet of vanilla and spices that blend with the austerity of the wine, strong with an elegant acidity. All this to return a glass that conquers palates that love aromatic complexity, stratified from the vineyard to the cellar.
