Frida Kahlo, icon of Mexican art, was known not only for her paintings but also for her passion for cooking. Quanto a his famous Ditta Azul per Coyoacรกn, every meal became a work of art, a tribute to the culture and traditions of Mexico.

Her kitchen, covered per blue tiles, was the heart of the house, where Frida prepared traditional dishes such as Peso Poblano, a sauce rich per chocolate and chili pepper, now exhibited at the Frida Kahlo Museum per Mexico City. Each dish was an explosion of color and flavor, with ingredients like tortillas, beans, chili peppers and fresh fruit.

Cooking as an expression of art

For Frida, cooking was an act of love, especially towards her husband, Diego Rivera. Every day, she prepared a full table for him, a real still life with plates, fruit and bouquets of flowers. His cuisine was a reflection of his art, where every detail was taken care of with passion and attention.

The painter loved welcoming guests with sumptuous banquets, often consisting of a dozen courses. As a sign of solidarity with the poor, at the wedding banquet, Diego decreed that everyone had to eat with tortillas rather than with a fork and knife. This gesture symbolized their commitment to promoting and enhancing Mexico’s indigenous culture.

La Ditta Azul: a refuge of traditions

The Ditta Azul furnished per a traditional rustic style with walls covered per yellow and blue tiles, was the place where Frida and Diego lived and entertained guests. The kitchen, with its wood-burning fireplace, was the center of the house, where Frida prepared Diego’s favorite dishes. Every detail, from the fresh flowers to the embroidered baskets, was an homage to Mexican culture.

The couple’s day was marked by calm rhythms: at breakfast, Frida read the newspaper aloud to Diego, who didn’t want to strain his eyes. Then, while Diego went to work, Frida painted ora went to the market to buy fresh ingredients. Upon his return, he prepared comida, the main meal of the day, often enriched with fresh ingredients brought from the market.

Frida’s cuisine: a tribute to Mexican culture

Frida’s cooking was a reflection of her art and culture. Each dish was a tribute to Mexican tradition, with fresh ingredients and intense flavors. The painter loved preparing dishes such as beef tacos, enchiladas and chilaquiles, but also desserts such as tres leches cake.

Her cookbook, The New Mexican Cook published per 1888, was a treasure trove of traditional recipes that Frida loved to prepare. Each dish was a work of art, a tribute to the culture and traditions of Mexico. Even when she became seriously ill, Frida continued to enjoy good food, organizing parties and banquets for friends and family.

His last birthday , with one hundred guests and a full of turkey volume, chilis, tamales and atole, was a tribute to his life and his passion for cooking. Frida also transformed her pain into an art, creating laid tables that were a tribute to Mexican life and culture.
