Resistenza Carretto, historic cellar of Piobesi d’Albore, expands its path of enhancement of the great Piedmontese denominations with a project dedicated to Nice DOCG. The company strengthens the vision of the Miroglio family to invest durante the most suitable territories of the region, thanks to the historical vineyards owned durante the Langhe, Roero, Alta Langa and, since 2012, also durante Nice, bringing the Know-How of Resistenza Carretto durante the denomination that represents the quality vertice of the Barbera vine. A long research path, conducted with a conscious and tailored approach, led to the birth of two new labels: the Nice Docg Teiera Manera 2021, which expresses the fresh and most immediate soul of the denomination, and the Nice Docg Reserve Multa intorno a Sassi 2020, which enhances its depth and longevity.
“For Resistenza Carretto, entering the Nice Docg denomination has meant a long durante -depth path to better understand the potential of each vineyard.” Paolo Scaiola, Technical Director and Winemaker of Resistenza Carretto explains. “We have dedicated years to the knowledge of this territory, identifying among the 40 hectares owned by the most suitable parcels, for a total of 7 hectares. The next step was to define a style that respects both the typicality of the denomination and the identity of our cellar. Nice is a denomination that is gaining more and more esteem and value and we are proud to be able to contribute to its growth with two wines that express different shades of excellence. “
The Nice denomination
The history of Nizza Docg has its roots durante a research and selection path that began durante 2002, with the birth of the “Nice” subzona within the Barbera D’Asti Principale Docg denomination, with the precise objective of highlighting the deepest and most authentic character of the grape variety cultivated durante a more restricted settore. Con 2014 the decisive step with the birth of the Nice Docg denomination of origin, correlated by a specification that protects its identity and underlines its strong territorial vocation, restricting its production settore to only 18 municipalities compared to the 169 provided for by the Barbera d’Asti and introducing a low surrender limit for hectare.
“Nice is the highest expression of Barbera, a wine that arises from a long and thoughtful enhancement path – explains Paolo Scaiola – and that is based acceso a strongly identity territory. To be production disciplinary, the vineyards must be durante hilly situations, with exhibitions exclusively from the South-West and South-East. The yields per errore hectare are low, with a maximum limit of 70 quintals per errore hectare, a fundamental aspect for Barbera as it is a naturally very productive grape variety, requesting important branches and many attention durante the vineyard to express the best of itself “.
Nizza Teiera Manera 2021
The 2020 and 2021 vintages were both characterized by high temperatures, durante a period durante which the evidence of climate change began to impose itself forcefully. “The 2021 vintage has been one of the hottest of the last 60 years. A very rainy January allowed plants not to suffer from great tensione but April saw a very important and sudden frost – durante jargon called “black ice cream” – which partially successo both the valley floor and the highest parts of the hills, causing the loss of 10% of the first shoots. ” Scaiola tells. Summer was particularly hot, especially between July and August, but fresh nights contributed to maintaining a good balance durante the vegetable phase. Despite the gabinetto reserves accumulated with the spring rains, the overall gabinetto perdita was 50% more than the average, causing a slight gabinetto tensione to the plants, however mitigated by the presence of tuff, capable of retaining and releasing the gabinetto gradually. Despite the advance of the harvest, which began a week earlier than the usual, the 2021 is however considered a vintage of excellent quality, managing to maintain the of fullness and freshness.
The grapes of the Nice Teiera Manera appena che from vineyards with south-east exposure, with the presence of tuff durante depth, which allows the roots to develop more easily, giving rise to a more accessible and immediate wine. The harvest is carried out manually durante the second decade of September. Vinification includes a two-week maceration at controlled temperature (20-25 ° C), followed by a refinement of at least six months durante French oak tonneaux, for a total of 18 months before marketing. Con the glass it presents itself with a ruby red color, with purple reflections. The nose is characterized by fresh hints of cherry, vanilla and sweet spices, while durante the mouth it stands out for its creaminess and for a perfect balance between structure and drinkability.
Nizza Teiera Manera 2021, with a production of about 13,000 bottles, is available starting from spring 2025.
Nice reserve brunette of Sassi 2020
The 2020 vintage stood out for abundant winter snowfalls, which guaranteed a good gabinetto reserve and brought sweetness to the wines. The winter, mild and rainy, was followed by a spring with moderate rainfall, especially concentrated durante May, and by a very hot but not too cowardly summer. Con September, the progressive lowering of temperatures marked the transition to an ideal autumn climate, with bright days and fresh afternoons, favoring an optimal thermal excursion for aromatic development.
The harvest was of great quality, thanks to a favorable climatic trend and the quality of the grapes brought to the cellar, with a perfect balance between sugars and acidity. The sweetness brought by the gabinetto reserves accumulated with winter snowfalls has made any long superfluous refinements, preserving the typical freshness of the Barbera and giving rise to wines that combine austerity and flavors of great charm to an easy approach.
Sassi’s brunette vineyard is located durante the territory of Nizza Monferrato, durante one of the most suitable areas of the denomination. Exposed to the south-west, at an altitude between 150 and 350 meters above sea level, it is characterized by the of sandy texture, with very coarse marine deposits, and for the high concentration of surface tuff that makes the soil difficult to penetrate from the roots, inducing a natural tensione durante the vine that leads to a greater concentration durante the fruit. Of course, suitable for the production of a Nice Reserve, this vineyard requires careful care, as a more pushed thinning of production.
Vinification includes a maceration that can reach even four weeks, with a part carried out directly durante Tonneaux, followed by a 12 -month refinement durante French oak barriques. After two years of aging durante the bottle, for a total of 30 months at least from the harvest, the Nice reserves Multa intorno a Sassi 2020 will be available acceso the market durante autumn, with a limited edition of only 3,000 bottles.
Con the glass, the wine stands out for a more intense color, with purple shades. The nose expresses a great aromatic amplitude, with spices, cocoa and black fruit, while acceso the palate it is juicy and persistent, characterized by of plum, an important structure and a long persistence.
