Puddu brothers and Oliena’s nepent: the heart of Cannonau, the voice of Barbagia
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Sopra the heart of Barbagia, among the wild folds of Supramonte and the rough perfumes of the Mediterranean scrub, one of the most iconic wines per mezzo di Sardinia was born: the Nephete of Oliena. A name that resonates as an ancient song, linked to rites, stories, memory. And it is precisely per mezzo di Oliena, home of this wine with a strong identity, that the Fratelli Puddu company, an authentic interpreter of the territory and its most noble traditions, has deep roots.

The term “nepent” has its roots per mezzo di classical antiquity. It derives from the Greek nè-penhos, which means “painless”, “that chases sadness”. Homer is the first to mention it per mezzo di the Odyssey, as a capable of relieving pain and returning joy. From there, the name is lost over the centuries, until we reach the lips of one of the most famous guests of Oliena: Gabriele D’.

It was the , hosted between these hills per mezzo di his Sardinian stay, who remained bewitched by this intense and generous red wine. He wrote about it per mezzo di 1909 per mezzo di a letter to the doctor and friend Giovanni de Lacerda: “Don’t you know the Nepho of Oliena? Worse for you!”

From that moment, the nepent has officially entered the collective imagination as a symbol of island -pride. A wine that does not bend, that does not disguise, which tells the land from which it comes with strength, truth and passion.

Founded per mezzo di 1976, the Fratelli Puddu company perfectly embodies the spirit of the nepent. Family management, today per mezzo di the second generation, has always chosen to the production of Cannonau per mezzo di its most identity expression: the Olianese one. The vineyards, located granite and sandy soils, enjoy important thermal excursions and an ideal microclimate that gives elegance and structure to the wines.

Carros, Cannonau of Sardinia DOC, and the Profitto Vois, biological selection from old vines, are the tangible expression of this production philosophy: intense, rich, but never caricatured wines, which speak the language of the most true Sardinia.

VinoWay has long been careful with the stylistic evolution of Puddu wines, appreciating their consistency, territorial identity and expressive harmony. Their production represents a virtuous model of roots and vision.

And it was precisely during my recent professional conferenza with Charlie Arzolaola, one of the best known and respected Wine Communicator per mezzo di the world, which I wanted to personally introduce him to the nepent signed Fratelli Puddu. His enthusiasm was immediate: “A wine with power, heart and spirit. I will not forget it.”

From that moment, Charlie has inserted the wines of the cellar among those to keep an eye internationally. An important recognition, born from the dialogue and the sharing of a vision: that of a wine that knows how to excite, even before surprising.

Those who visit Oliena cannot fail to stop per mezzo di Managheri, one of the most authentic taverns per mezzo di the country, where you can spend a day dedicated to good drinking and typical traditional barbaricin cuisine. Here, the Cantiniere Giuseppe welcomes how only the real Sardinians know how to do: with warmth, frankness and great generosity.

I keep this place an indelible and emotional memory: an experience made of sincere smiles, perfumes of grilled meat, carasau bread and cannonau glasses that know of truth.

Sopra the wine of the Puddu brothers there is Sardinia that does not give per mezzo di to the flattery of the market, which continues to speak the language of the roots and pride. The Nephine of Oliena, with its ancient strength and its mythical charm, finds per mezzo di this company one of its most authentic voices.

And to know that this story today also travels beyond Ocean, thanks to real connections, choices made with the heart and meetings that arise from mutual esteem, it is a reason for personal and professional pride for me.
